But, not for the reason you might think.
This is the indication from a Lexus Blind-Spot Monitoring system. It's visual only, so you still have to check your mirrors to see it. And I agree completely about needless technology intrusion into what should be basic driving skills.
However, the indicator is really rather bright, so unless you're a horse, driving with blinders on, your peripheral vision should pick it up easily. And, it's not like they are building cars with decent greenhouse visibility anymore anyway. I would even argue that most cars actually do need a back-up camera because there is so little window in the back.
But, with the BSM systems, it gives other drivers a clue they are being dumb; if they would only look for it. When that indicator is on, it means that the driver can't see you. You're in their blind-spot.
So adjust your car's speed so you're not in my their blind-spot.
Asshats.

So ... you like BMS because it monitors your blind spot? That's pretty much exactly what I thought.

I've been driving a bunch of cars with BLIS lately. I hate it. I prefer the integrated blind spot mirrors.

No, I like it because it lets others know they are in my blind spot and need to move.

I like blind spot monitoring systems because I am a motorcyclist who likes being alive.

The visual of a horse driving with blinders on is hilarious

I remember reading about some optics guru who created a mirror without blind spots.
But it can't be equipped in the US because we have outlawed convex side mirrors.

When I pass a car and see that little orange light in the mirror, I sometimes try and see how long I can keep it lit. Fun little game.

I wonder how much shit I would get in if I got pulled over and proceeded to put a horse head on.

Not cool at all.
I hope you never need to perform an evasive maneuver and someone is in your blind spot.
Don't be a dick while you're driving.

Yeah. I drove a Ford Mondeo with that mirror. It was really weird
Someone brought it up when I asked which you'd rather have a few weeks ago. http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/which-would-yo…

If you would just align your mirrors properly, you wouldn't need either.

If I recall correctly, the mirrors I mentioned did not have the carnival-fun-house effect, and only had a wider field of view.
This is achieved by subtle changes in the curvature of the glass from concave to convex, though the overall curve leans toward convex.

Quit being so pedantic.
Yes, that is how the system works. I like them not because they give the driver of the car equipped with said system an indicator, but that they give the traffic around that car an indicator they need to change position relative the the BSM equipped vehicle.

Me too, only because they illuminate when you're far enough back that you're not actually IN a blind spot. There's usually half a carlength or more.

If they reliably pick up motorcycles, that would be great. I'm a little suspect of it though, and that would be one more excuse for brainless drivers to not notice you.
For some people there is no hope. I had a guy lane change into me while I was exactly next to his door to the point that I had to slap the door sill of his pickup to keep from being driven into a curb. He looked pretty surprised.
I would have just slammed on the brakes, but we were going so slow (15 in a roundabout) I think he still would have clipped me.

Unless you're driving a tank, proper mirror orientation will eliminate any blindspot woes

I still like that these systems give other drivers a visual indicator to change position relative to the vehicle next to them.

If people would drive while they are driving they would know if someone is in your blind spot cause you would have seen them approaching. Convex mirrors work well enough for me.
